Social Security Proudly Serves Our Hispanic Customers

Importance-of-Social-Security-to-Hispanics-(LULAC)This week, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is celebrating their annual convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. LULAC is an organization dedicated to the economic, educational, civic, and political advancement of Hispanics in the United States.

This year, the convention focuses on the FAMILIA: The Building Blocks for Our Society. Through workshops and moderated discussions, conference attendees will learn how to strengthen their leadership abilities, and how to serve their community and society.

Social Security celebrates LULAC’s dedication to the Hispanic community. According to the Census Bureau, as of July 1, 2012, the Hispanic population of the United States was 53 million – making people of Hispanic origin the nation’s largest ethnic minority group.

The Hispanics and Social Security section of our website highlights how Hispanics benefit from the Social Security program, and how certain demographic characteristics compare to the entire population. The Hispanic population in the U.S. is expected to grow 28 percent by 2050 and 31 percent by 2060!

Social Security has always served people of all races and ethnicities including those who prefer to communicate with us in Spanish. And, our online Spanish services — Servicios por Internet — allow our Spanish-speaking customers to do business with us from their preferred Wi-Fi enabled location. In addition, we offer interpreter services free of charge when conducting business with us over the phone, in person when visiting our offices, or when attending our events.

For more information about the services and benefits we offer to the Hispanic community, please visit Online Services in Spanish or, en Español, www.SeguroSocial.gov.

  1. If they’re Americans, then they should speak English. Why cater to someone who won’t bother to learn the language of the country that they live in. I think it’s disgusting! Spanish signs everywhere and our language is ENGLISH. Are they too stupid to learn it? I learned spanish in High School……and I will never speak it again, or reply to someone who speaks to me in spanish.

    • When is there EVER going to be ACKNOWLEDGEMENT to the people who actually started America?
      Caucasian Europeans for God’s sake.
Give credit where it is DUE and not just politically correct junk
      you fools!!

    • You are just plain ignorant in your remarks. You probably shouldn’t try to speak Spanish to anyone because your Spanish is most likely as bad as your inane comments.

    • I hate the word cater.. to show hospitality to any nationality in America is good.

Not cater=pride and laziness and an excuse not to be nice and think your better then someone else..

    • I am so torn about this whole horrible issue. I have had friends from grade school that were hispanic. It never mattered until everything is now in English and spanish! I resent that my ancestors came to the US centeries ago. They came legally. They were from Ireland, Germany, France and I also have native American roots. ALL of them learned English and became a part of the USA. They did this because they wanted to be Americans, I know my Great-Grandfarther spoke German at home but never in public. I am sure learning English after you only spoke and wrote German was hard. They wanted to “blend in” with Americans not have their own ideas, language and traditions throw in others faces! That’s the real problem that people resent. Why does the hispanic community want to be “separate” from the rest of our country? Why doesn’t the hispanic community see that the illegal immigrants are a problem for ALL of us?
Why do they feel like we should learn spanish and accept them as a whole other separate community? I know that millions of hispanics are here legally and that they have contributed to our country for generations. So why now is it different? When did this issue with everything being in English & Spanish start?

      • Simplistically, they want a takeover, not assimilation. They don’t want to be American, just enjoy the benefits, which will revert back to what they left if the divisiveness continues. A sad day for America.

        • If People deos not know How to apreciarte diversity then you should not talk, my Scottish Decendant Grandfather used to tell me that “If you do not have anything good to say or contribute then say nothing”.

          Wise words you prejudice mob.

    • You are so wrong in so many ways you had to take a language in school so you took Spanish. Big deal look at all the other languages that are out there I see you aren’t critical of that why. Am so happy for my ethics . proud that my parents taught me to speak, read n write.Spanish for I was able to get wonderful jobs. Don’t judge so you won’t be judge.

      • Hispanic or Latino is not a separate race, but a culture belonging to people of many different races. To ask people who want to live in America and be considered Americans to speak the national language is not “racist.”

        • You are correct, is just the way that you say it, by the way, We are all, in this hemisphere, are AMERICANS, NORTH, CENTRAL AND SOUTH just parts of different Republics.

    • Who said they didn’t work for it? You are just assuming without knowing actual facts. There are several Hispanics that came to our country, became citizens and worked hard and paid taxes. Some came as adults and did not have the advantages of learning English in school growing up but still worked and learned enough to be productive and pay taxes. Just because they prefer to speak in their native tongue does not mean they didn’t work for it!

      • How do you know they never worked for it? do you know and watch what they do every day of their life… where do you think we get our cashews from?? hmmmm?

    • Are you serious? Immigrants work harder and always have a job more than your lazy ass who were born and raised here.

  2. Spanish Americans? If people wish to hold on to their heritage by continuing to speak their native language, they should remain wherever it is they came from. I object to catering to people who don’t wish to assimilate…especially when taxpayer dollars are used. If your government employees have a passion for immigrants who can’t speak English (and need assistance signing up for welfare) go it through a church or privately funded charity…not with other peoples money. Didn’t your parents teach you any better?

    • I totally agree with all of these comments, my thoughts exactly! I am tired of these free-loaders getting FREE what we American citizens AND our Ancestor’s had to work hard for! Send these illegal immigrants back to their OWN COUNTRY. If they can’t come into our country the LEGAL method and EARN their way, then stay OUT

      • Where do you idiots get “illegal immigrants” from social security saying that the cater to their Spanish speaking members? If a Spanish speaking person is collecting social security it’s because they are legal! An illegal person cannot collect. I guess you people never finished high school?

    • racism is horrible… its sad it still exists and so is jealousy… dont be jealous of what others have, even other nationalities.. god is not a respector of persons… you just might look at what he’s blessed you with instead of being jealous of what others have..

    • If the next President is Hispanic American than thats God who put him in that position. Talk to God when you dont agree with whos in a leadership position..

  3. I agree, they are coming receiving all the social services without ever having to work for them. Draining us, using our schools, and welfare.
Charity begins at home, when our homeless have homes, the veterans have everything they need, our elderly are taken care of, then come back and ask me about helping others, a lot of United States citizens that have been here for several generations and have worked hard to provide for their families should come first. How dare you speak anything except English when applying for anything. Drivers License and cannot read or speak English how do they get insurance or know here thy re going if they cannot read the road signs. They line up and send thousands of dollars out of the US, they should not be allowed to send any money out, who is receiving it? Have a good guess. Most of it never reaches the family.

    • Havent worked for them?? have you seen the muscle tone on Spanish??? looks like work to me.. take a good look at yourself… what havent you worked for… stop being jealous of what others have…

  4. I don’t have a problem with Hispanics getting Social Security if they paid into the system AND came here legally. I do however have a problem with them not wanting to be Americans. They should learn our language and assimilate. You should not give them an excuse not to learn English and they don’t get a free ride on the backs of tax paying Americans.

  5. I’m sick and tired of supporting criminals who sneak into our country draining our funds for every entitlement program they can find. If only as much consideration was given to American citizens as they are given for free. This political correctness will be the death of my country, along with politicians who bend on knees for a vote. Enough!! Close the borders with force if necessary.. they don’t hesitate to shoot American’s. Obama has been successful, he has as promised “fundamentally changed America”. We are soon to be a white minority and on equal footing with other third world country’s. What a legacy he has.

  6. Why must every group be give special attention, unless you are European-American. I cannot understand why so many people desire to make America the same as those counties that people want to escape from. Maybe they are infected with the ‘misery loves company’ phenomenon.

  7. What a disgrace and slap in the face of Americans who are being refused or receiving reduced benefits due to the illegals getting benefits that are not theirs.

  8. I work as a specialist in Social Security in a Financial Planning firm. The fact is that no one is entitled to Social Security Benefits until they work and pay into the system for 40 quarters or 10 years minimum. All Hispanic-American retirees who are collecting benefits have paid to receive those benefits just as every other american has.

  9. Looks like I disagree with all the people who posted ahead of me on this subject. First you can’t collect Social Security unless you have a Number. I’m French Canadian and my parents spoke French and English at home and at work and with their friends. My grandparents on both sides spoke just French and barely any English and that didn’t make any one of us any less American than all of you.. My best buddy growing up was Lithuanian and is Grandmother didn’t know a word of English and she was the best person in the world. You want to know what poor is it was my friends grandmother and my wife and her family who came from East Germany the year before the Russians put up the wall. These people left every single thing that they owned to get out of there. My wife is in America only because of marrying me. So before condemning a whole group of people you should check out your info, You all sound so biggeted or jealous instead of being happy that people come and are able to enjoy some freedoms that they weren’t able to or allowed where they came from. “Life is short and it does have an expiration date.” Enjoy what you have and be glad your able to make someone else happy.. You’ll never be happy carrying a chip on your shoulder and worrying about what other people are doing. This is quit long and doubt anyone will read it to the end. God Bless

    • Edmond, I read it to the end, well said! Unfortunately racism is still alive and well in America. As a social worker who works with many Hispanics, legal and illegal; people are embarrassed to speak English because they fear the’ll make a mistake and will be laughed at. Why not have some compassion for differences?

  10. Most of you are a bunch of hypocrites. You born and raised here and most of you won’t go to school and you are talking about immigrants coming to your country and steal your jobs and collecting welfare. You should know that if one didn’t work and paid taxes they cannot collect social security benefits. When we come to this country we come for a purpose, we do not seat on our lazy ass….we work many jobs to send our children to the best private schools …stop being jealous . because we are here doesn’t mean we have to forget where we come from and stop speaking our native language.

  11. SSA does not tell the truth. While SSA claims to proudly serve the Hispanic community, SSA actually discriminates against its employees of Hispanic heritage,

The facts are that only 3.15% of Hispanic employees received the highest overall appraisal rating – OUTSTANDING – from SSA discriminating managers. This is the lowest percentage of any major employee racial and ethnic group. White employees had 2 1/2 times more highly rated employees or 7.7% OF THE WHITE WORKFORCE. . ASIANS, BLACKS, AND AMERICAN INDIANS HAD A HIGHER PERSCENTAGE OF OUTSTANDING RATED EMPLOYEES THAN HISPANICS IN FY 13. (FY 14 NUMBERS HAVE YET TO BE RECEIVED).

So maybe SSA can explain to LULAC why it feels that Hispanic employees are the worst in SSA. Perhaps its because of endemic discrimination in SSA.

Tell the truth when you print propaganda regarding your “celebration” of Hispanics. When it comes to your own employees in SSA you give them low appraisals which adversely affects their ability to get promoted. That’s the real SSA.

  12. nothing Perfectly, everything must getting the hard work to getting a lot of money. So whatever yours situation just try to be better and trusting if God Never gives you and me all something badge.

  13. Trusting
    JUST DOWN YOUR KNEES
GIVEED WHAT CAN YOU GIVE BUT DON’T make people thing some thing happens in you
Never to say Never Give Up

      • THE FIRST I wanna to say apologize. My comment Not for someone but when i check my names in the social network or Google search YAYU IRAHAYU OR YAYU OR YAYU IRAHAYU DJOJO when I click look at YAYU IRAHAYU in this post HISPANIC . I am from Indonesia and my language is not good enough. I’m want to say apologize if something mistake of my comments. Thank you. Regret

  14. I’m from HI. I took Spanish in High
    School and college. Still couldn’t
speak it. Then I worked in LA for
7 years and now I can speak some
Spanish. Whenever I go to the Mainland I enjoy talking in Spanish
with Hispanics. In Hawaiian the word for Spanish is Paniolo. It also
    means Hawn Cowboy. Comes from
    “Espanol”. Gracias.

  15. What is the problem with the socil security people?
S.S was made for the American people back in 1935. Now you cater specially to the Hispanics with all the extra’s and special payments and now a special Convention, which of course is payed for by the Americans that have paid in the fund. When will we Americans began to be treated with all the extra specials. And I also have to pay each year for my own Medicare plus all that it does not pay.
There is a MAJOR problem here, singling one group out for special treatment, care and payments because they are illegal and cannot, and won’t speak English.
    What a soory lot!!!

    • So no one of Hispanic origin lived in the US in 1935 ? History disagrees with you.
And not speaking English or speaking it well has nothing to do with if they are legally present or not.
Since you mention 1935, are you an America Indian ? I think every one posting racist comments on this article need to realize that they too were “foreign” at some point in their family tree. Do you honestly think EVERYONE comes in to the US speaking English ? MANY people of Germanic/Scottish/Indian/African et al. came in to the US at that time and due to poor economic conditions, sadly were uneducated and unable to put aside the time to learn our language ( which is one of the hardest to learn properly , as your post shows ) in order to make money and survive. Should they too be denied benefits or if they are currently receiving them have them cut off ?
All these people meet your ( all of you posting such hate ) criteria. So look in the mirror first.
PS: If anyone posted such things and is of American Indian decent, your post wins, and I apologize. Everyone else, get over yourselves.

  16. This is great! Thank you for all your hard work. Latinos are part of this country and we are not going anywhere. We speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and every language in between. This is a great step by the SSA. Thank you.

  17. Thank you for doing this…very proud to be a Latino American and appreciate all the efforts our SSA is making to serve the community. My father and grandfather are both veterans and they speak mostly Spanish. Thank you for serving our community.

    • We’re grateful for your father’s and grandfather’s military service, Thomas! Thanks so much for the feedback. We look forward to continue serving the Hispanic community and other groups who make up America’s rich diversity.

  18. Many thanks to Social Security for meeting their customers where they are, whether that’s through multi-lingual services, or services for the visual and hearing impaired. It is tragic that in 2015 we still have people who assume that immigrants are undocumented and are a drain on our nation’s resources. Thanks to organizations like LULAC, that serve to educate and inform the collective, we will progressively get closer to equality, respect and understanding. Social Security is to be commended for their partnership with LULAC and for adapting to serve ALL Americans.

    • Right on, Amy – we’re proud to be associated with LULAC and proud to serve all Americans!

  19. I salute Social Security Admin. for adapting to the diverse population of the United States. Latinos contribute as much as any English Speaking person. We should all embrace everyone regardless of language, skin color, race, etc.

  20. My grandfather was never able to access this information in Spanish and now he will be able to. After dedicating his life to working in America he will be informed in his preferred language. Great news! Good job.

  21. Thank you Social Security for celebrating diversity in America. It is unfortunate that many of the comments are not based on facts but based on personal perceptions/racism. It is clear that what is enabling America to succeed in the 21st century is its educated workforce that include global citizens with the advantage of speaking more than one language.

Let’s get the fact rights. Anyone who thinks Latinos are a drag on our economy are wrong (some, in fact, have been here before parts of the Southwest were part of what is the United States now). Due to their increasing numbers as a population and above average numbers in the workforce, many of these individuals are keeping the Social Security from being depleted thus allowing retiring Americans to receive this benefit.

  22. Yes, muchas gracias SSA for reaching out and providing services to the Hispanic community. We have served in America’s wars, we have worked in her factories, we have helped raise your children, we have harvested the wheat for your bread, picked the oranges for your morning juice, we have sweated in your fields picking the lettuce and tomatoes for your salad. We have brought color to the American life, fiestas, margaritas, guacamole and the taco. Most
importantly our ancesters were here before the pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Without us the economies of many states would be underwater… and yes we do pay taxes and we have an earned the right to Social Security
benefits. And most importantly, we are here to stay, let us learn to live together as one colorful nation. Amen

  23. Please stop segregating everyone! our goverment think thinks everyone has to be in a box, they create bigotry!

  24. Free DIRT (Disability Insurance Reallocation Tax) Act of 2016-2020 HA-7-7-15 http://www.title24uscode.org/ssa2016.doc

To avoid burdening the U.S. Supreme Court with the responsibility for criminally convicting the SSA Actuary, Commissioner and Trustees (ACT) in 2016 for deprivation of relief benefits under 18USC§246 when they conspire to cut DI benefits to 80% because the DI Trust Fund will be completely depleted under “current law”, whereas: (a) the SSA Actuary has not gotten right FDR’s infamous “pain the OASDI tax rate calculus”, that takes a week to differentiate the first time, the Chief Actuary has responded to the President in regards to the OASDI reallocation question with a common wrong answer – 2.7% – October 1, 2015 is not too late for Congress to get the OASDI FICA tax rate right to avoid depletion of the DI Trust Fund in FY2016; (b) SSA administrators are peculiarly obsessed with continuing their $666 persecution on DI beneficiaries in violation of the 42 month limit (Revelation 13:10) when a beneficiary receiving $600-$699 a month should automatically receive an increase to $700 plus annual COLA thereafter; (c) Congress and other rich taxpayers should not be compelled to contribute their incomes above $118,500 (2015) to the attached, but separate roll-call vote, on the 130% increase in tax-base that would be derived from the OASDI Without Income Limit Law (WILL) and shared with the U.S. Treasury, until the SSA Actuary has calculated the baseline in dollar amounts for the optimal OASDI reallocation tax rate, projected to pay benefits until 2020, at no cost to taxpayers, free.

To immediately amend the DI tax rate from 1.80% to 2.30%, from 0.90% to 1.15% for employees and from 0.90% to 1.15% for employers under Sec. 201(b)(1)(S) of the Social Security Act 42USC(7)II§401 and amend the OASI tax rate from 10.60% to 10.10%, from 5.30% to 5.05% for employees under 26USC(C)(21)(A)§3101 (a) and from 5.30% to 5.05% for employers under 26USC(C)(21)(A)§3111 (a) to avoid depletion of the Disability Insurance (DI) Trust Fund in 2016 without increasing the overall 12.4% OASDI or 15.3% OASDI and Hospital Insurance (HI) tax-rate under 26USC(A)(2)§1401 beginning October 1, 2015.

To amend the DI tax rate again in 2018 to 2.20% from 2.30%, from 1.15% to 1.10% for employees and from 1.15% to 1.10% for employers under Sec. 201(b)(1)(S) of the Social Security Act 42USC(7)II§401 and amend the OASI tax rate from 10.10% to 10.20%, from 5.05% to 5.10% for employees under 26USC(C)(21)(A)§3101 (a) and from 5.05% to 5.10% for employers under 26USC(C)(21)(A)§3111 (a) without increasing the overall 12.4% OASDI or 15.3% OASDI and Hospital Insurance (HI) tax-rate under 26USC(A)(2)§1401 to maximize efficiency until a deficit appears in the OASI Trust Fund in 2020.

Without Income Limit Law (WILL) Act

To abolish the maximum taxable limit on DI contributions on January 1, 2016 and OASI contributions January 1, 2017 and repeal Adjustment of the contribution and benefit base Section 230 of the Social Security Act 42USC(7)§430.

To require the Social Security Administration to pay for SSI Costs beginning January 1, 2017.

To share profits in excess of social security program costs to the general fund of the U.S Treasury on a sliding scale beginning in 2017 DI 50/50 prioritizing the $22 billion + 2% annual growth cost of USPS, and OASI 10/90 to eliminate the federal budget deficit. In 2020 OASI would share at negotiated rates an estimated 25/75, in 2025 OASDI would share 50/50 and by 2030 75/25 and at 2035 OASDI would take all to pay for the peak in costs of Baby Boomer generation and might need to raise the overall OASDI tax rate.

    Hecho por no documentado

  25. I live in an area of California that farms much of the produce that feeds our country and many people in other parts of the world. Every time I drive anywhere, I see rows of workers bent over or crouched on the ground, working the fields. I wonder how or when any of them could learn English? There isn’t a northern European among them. – or anyone to chat with them in English. And since they work from dawn to dark, there’s not a lot of extra time to go out socializing in English.

Our country was established by British colonists and their descendents. At the time of the Revolution, 87% were Puritans…. a rather strict sect … I thank God they established the principles of religious freedom.

But you may recall that Hispanics funded the journey of an Italian man who led the colonists to Atlantic shores. While there were many Spanish expeditions, it was more than 100 years before the British began to have a presence in America. So even by completely discounting the native populations who were present about 14,000 years ago, Hispanics are our founding peoples. These facts of history ought to inspire pride in our Hispanic populations, but we seem to hold it against them for being willing to take the jobs that no one else wants – jobs that aren’t held in prestige. Or is it just racism?

I suspect at least some are undocumented workers, sending their earnings home to their families (wherever they may be). Some are newly arrived workers with documentation, and many are from several generations of American farming families. It is my belief that without them, our agricultural industry would not be able to contribute so much wealth to our American economy. With such a huge gap between our exports and imports, we can be grateful that our Hispanic population is willing to support this distinctly American industry. There are not many other citizens of any nationality who are willing to participate in this back breaking work. Thank goodness our laws are finally beginning to give them some of the protections that other American workers enjoy.

Finally, go to a welfare office someday. Look around. This is one of the many places where Hispanics are disproportionately underrepresented.

Social Security is not an entitlement program, it is not welfare. It is a minimal pension benefit available to those who pay into it.

  26. My descendants were here since the early 16th century in what is now the Southwest of the United States. They came, they tamed the land, and became incredibly prosperous through hard work and ingenuity before there was a US! It is because the Hispanic culture in agriculture , business and the arts that this country thrived to what it is today. Hispanic veterans have the most Medal of Honor recepients than any other race because we are courageous and persistent. When you malign us, you malign yourself, self-styled American, because without Hispanics, you wouldn’t be.
